Gleichzeitig war Haithabu direkt mit dem Danewerk, einer großen Grenzbefestigung, verbunden, was Schutz und politische Stabilität bot. Der Ochsenweg, eine wichtige Nord-Süd-Landroute, führte in der Nähe vorbei und verband Haithabu mit weiteren Handelszentren.
