Jahrhundert von friesischen Kaufleuten gegründet, entwickelte sich schnell zu einem zentralen Umschlagplatz für Waren zwischen Nord- und Ostsee, da von hier nur etwa 18 Kilometer Landweg zur Nordsee bestanden.
