Er ist 98,26 Kilometer lang und wurde zwischen 1887 und 1895 erbaut, zunächst als Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, später in Nord-Ostsee-Kanal umbenannt. Der Kanal verläuft durch Schleswig-Holstein und bildet zwischen Rendsburg und Kiel die Grenze zwischen den Landesteilen Schleswig und Holstein.
