Luftbild Bredstedter Koog - Gemeinde Reußenköge im Kreis Nordfriesland | Die frühen Eindeichungsversuche im Bereich der Bredstedter Bucht scheiterten hauptsächlich an schweren Sturmfluten, insbesondere der Eisflut vom 10. Januar 1625 (auch Fastelabendflut genannt). Bei dieser Flut wurden bereits fertiggestellte Deichabschnitte durch treibendes Eis und starke Strömungen zerstört. Zudem war die technische Kompetenz im Deichbau zu dieser Zeit noch unzureichend – sogenannte Stackdeiche wurden oft ohne ausreichendes Vorland errichtet, was sie besonders sturmanfällig machte.
