Ein breites, flaches Vorland dämpfte die Kraft der Meereswellen und Sturmfluten, bevor sie den eigentlichen Deich erreichten. Dadurch wurde der Deich weniger stark belastet und die Gefahr von Unterspülung oder Bruch verringert. Erst wenn das Vorland durch natürliche Ablagerungen von Schlick und Sedimenten „deichreif“ war – also stabil und dauerhaft trocken –, wurde ein fester Winterdeich errichtet, um das neue Land dauerhaft zu schützen.
