Mit rund 14.300 Einwohnern ist es der bevölkerungsreichste Stadtteil der Stadt. Ursprünglich ein kleiner Wohnplatz an der Mürwiker Bucht, entwickelte es sich ab 1903 durch die Ansiedlung der Kaiserlichen Marine zu einem bedeutenden Marinestützpunkt. Heute ist Mürwik vor allem durch die Marineschule Mürwik (MSM) bekannt, die seit 1910 die „Alma Mater“ der Marineoffiziere ist.
