Das nordfriesische Wattenmeer vor Langeneß und Oland - Luftbild | Schon in der Jungsteinzeit und der Wikingerzeit waren die Gebiete bewohnt, doch die Friesen kultivierten die Flächen erst massiv im Mittelalter durch Deiche und Torfabbau. Die legendäre Siedlung Rungholt und eine weiträumige Kulturlandschaft von Eiderstedt bis zu den Halligen gingen bei der Groten Mandränke unter, wodurch das Watt als „Zeitkapsel“ archäologische Überreste bewahrte. Auf Oland, der ältesten der heute noch bestehenden Halligen, starben 1634 bei der Burchardiflut vier Menschen, und auch spätere Fluten wie die Weihnachtsflut 1717 richteten große Schäden an.
